Venom 2: Director Andy Serkis Gives ‘Thrilling’ Production Update On Film — But Do Fans Care?

I honestly can’t say there are very many of us who are thrilled at the prospect of Venom 2. I thought the first one was goofy, harmless, and entertaining, but I don’t hold any illusions about it being a quality movie. Nor do I think it would actually ever resonate with fans of the character (for the record, the character really doesn’t carry much weight with me, so take from that what you will). That being said, no one seemed to be excited for the first movie, and that one went on to do very well at the box office — specifically in overseas markets like China.

In the time since then, a new director in the form of Andy Serkis has hopped onto the project, and this past November, it quietly started production. It’s been a couple of months since then, and Serkis offered an update at this past weekend’s BAFTA event (via ComicBook.com).

“Well, you know, I really can’t talk too much about it – I know, boring – but we’re 40 days into the shoot and it’s really thrilling,” he said. “We’ve got the magnificent Tom Hardy, who’s obviously at the center of it, and we sort of see a deepening of the relationship between him and obviously there’s a nemesis character and… that’s all I can say.”

At this point, little to nothing is known about this movie. At the end of the first one, we were introduced to the psychotic Cletus Kasady, who goes on to become the sadistic Carnage. That seems to be the natural way to push things for this sequel, but we can’t forget how universe-hungry Sony is. As has been evident for a while, they are eager to incorporate Spider-Man into their universe and have already even done so (somewhat) in the Morbius film, as indicated by the recent trailer.

Needless to say, much to the chagrin of Venom fans around the world, the studio seems poised to start merging things together, capitalizing on the Spider-Man character Marvel Studios helped form over the course of several films.

If nothing else, Serkis’ involvement does at least get me interested. But is he being allowed to truly utilize his skills? We’ll have to wait and see.

If nothing else, there do seem to be a good number of people on Twitter excited about, with Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld even claiming it will be the biggest comic book movie of the year.
