Venom 2 Producer Would Consider R-Rated Film In Wake Of Joker’s Success

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Runtime Is Only 90-Minutes

One film is a fluke. Two films is intriguing. Three films is a bona fide trend. When Deadpool hit theaters, it impressed audiences with its $780-some-odd-million haul, exceeding all expectations along the way. Logan was a more serious movie, but it still managed to impress with a $619 million haul. But then Joker comes along and blows the doors off the box office with over $1 billion thus far.

It appears that Hollywood producers and execs are finally opening their eyes to the possibilities of R-rated films — so long as the character they’re following calls for it. So what about Venom? Fans have maintained that he’s better suited to an R-rated film than PG-13, though that isn’t what we got in Ruben Fleischer’s film.

But what about the sequel? Well, producer Matt Tolmach seems open to the possibility.

“I mean, I think you always have to think about [it], now that that works. Having said that, our movie worked really well. Our franchise exists as it is, and I don’t think anybody is looking to just say, ‘Hey, they [did it]!’ We have a place in the world. So it isn’t like suddenly everybody’s considering what to do with the rating. … I think what Joker does is it tells you that you can succeed. For a very long time, that was the narrative. And Deadpool sort of wrestled that to the turf, and then Logan, but for a long time, that was considered totally forbidden. … So you know, I think it’s the greatest thing in the world that R-rated movies are being embraced by massive audiences. And it just means that there are more opportunities for that kind of storytelling.”

This doesn’t necessarily mean the Andy Serkis-directed sequel will go that route, but it does seem to open the possibility. So long as it fits with the character, I think I’m open to it, even if it is inconsistent with its predecessor. From what we hear DC is open to created R-rated films within their established universe, so there’s no reason Sony can’t do the same with theirs.
