Well, Venom has come and it has done… okay. It was revealed that audiences have given it a B+ overall via CinemaScore, and this stands in line with an audience score of 89 at Rotten Tomatoes. Critics, on the other hand, have not been so forgiving for Sony’s hopeful flagship franchise as the movie has received a 35 and 31 from MetaCritic and Rotten Tomatoes respectively.
I will be honest with you, other than our own Fox Troilo (His Review), I don’t know anyone who has seen this movie and liked it. I know five people that have spent hard-earned money on it and are not happy that they did. To be fair, they’re all super-geeks, and I can understand how this movie can appeal to a general audience member. Many people only know Venom from the old cartoon and Spider-Man 3 so to them, this could be gold! It does have some dark humor, action sequences, and several Spidey-verse easter eggs to satiate these types viewers.

If you take time to browse the usual spots for audience opinions you will see people describing it as a stupid fun movie, better than expected, funny, and exciting. There’s also been a constant idea that the less you know about the character, the more you’ll enjoy it. Still, this isn’t enough to get me to go see this movie in theaters. However, if you want something of an explanation, I highly recommend you take a listen to the new By The Numbers episode down below. In it, our editor-in-chief Joseph Jammer Medina discusses the lenient nature of CinemaScore, and how a B+ isn’t necessarily a ringing endorsement.
Sony has burned me before, and I am sure they will again. Yes, I am being a bit of a pessimist but did you see The Amazing Spider-Man or The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Either way, I am hoping that Marvel and Sony can work out some deal to bring Venom over to the MCU and just make this movie part of a Spidey-Multiverse. I know that’s not the best idea, buy it may be the only way. My biggest fear is that Sony will not renew the Wall Crawler deal with Marvel and bring Tom over and try to ride his MCU success to the bank.
