Watch the WiNDUP Animated Short Film and Q&A

WiNDUP

Unity, a video software company, showcases its real-time 3D technology in this touching and tearful animated short WiNDUP.

In this nine-minute animated short, WiNDUP is a collaboration with artists working remotely from around the world, creating in real-time with Unity. Yibing Jiang wrote and directed the short film based on her own childhood experience in Wuhan, China. Also, Jason Keane, the animation director, worked on the project. Keane is related to his grandfather Bill Keane, creator of Family Circus comics and his uncle Glenn Keane, director of Oscar-winning animated short Dear Basketball and Netflix’s Over the Moon.

Here’s a brief synopsis:

At a time when we are feeling isolated, craving connection and preoccupied with the health and well-being of loved ones, the theme of the film is an uplifting universal one that highlights the fragile nature of life, love, resiliency, and the healing power of music, told through the eyes of a father and the special bond he shares with his ailing young daughter.

The film is created in real-time 3D in out-of-the-box Unity 2019.2. WiNDUP was created on standard computers by setting strict rules about poly-count and what features they could afford to use. Examples including using pixel displacement instead of tessellation shader, using joints animation instead of animation caches.
