If you thought the era of spinoffs had already reached an apex, think again. While Marvel Studios seems pretty willing to take risks on no-name characters in standalone films, DC seems to be taking the approach of the spinoff. We’ve already seen characters like Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman spin off of various DC films in the past, and they seem to be doubling down on that approach in the near future, if we’re to believe a new report from Variety.
According to the outlet, director Matt Reeves’ The Batman looks to be an important one for the studio. As has been widely reportedly already, the film will feature many a villain in an overall story that sees the Caped Crusader bouncing from villain to villain in a mystery. But WB has high hopes for the characters populating this world.

Reportedly, they hope that some of these villains will be able to headline their own spinoff movies. As we already know, the likes of Riddler, Penguin, and Catwoman are already set to star in some capacity, but there are likely plenty others that will be found within the walls of Arkham Asylum — though, it is worth noting that only a handful of scenes take place in this famous mental hospital.
All of this does make sense, given Joker’s success. As both an R-rated film and a villain-centric one, it’s managed to reel in over $1 billion worldwide. It’s no wonder that there are outlets claiming Warner Bros. has already gotten the ball rolling on a sequel — even if that specific report ended up being a bit premature.
