In a turn of events set to unfold this summer, the X-Men are gearing up for a monumental challenge in the upcoming four-issue limited series, X-MEN: HEIR OF APOCALYPSE. Crafted by the duo of writer Steve Foxe (known for X-Men ’97 and Dead X-Men) and artist Netho Diaz (renowned for Daredevil: Black Armor), this saga is set to kick off in May, promising an intense tournament that will determine the inheritor of Apocalypse’s sacred mantle.
Apocalypse, the former archenemy of the X-Men, is gathering 12 mutants for an unprecedented competition. These mutants, a mix of iconic figures, fan favorites, and villains, include Armageddon Girl, Cable, Cypher, Emma Frost, Exodus, Forge, Gorgon, Mirage, Mr. Sinister, Penance, Rictor, and Wolverine (Laura Kinney). As the Krakoan Age witnesses Apocalypse’s transformation from a super villain to a revered mutant leader, he returns to Arakko to guide his homeland towards a new destiny. However, his work on Earth remains unfinished, especially in the aftermath of Krakoa’s brutal fall.
The four-issue series will delve into trials that test the heart, body, mind, and soul of the participating mutants. Only one will emerge as the chosen successor to follow in Apocalypse’s mighty footsteps, an individual deemed fit to take on the sacred responsibility.
Steve Foxe shared his thoughts on the project, expressing both the honor and pressure of contributing to the legacy of Apocalypse. Foxe emphasized the immense significance of this series in shaping the future of Apocalypse’s narrative. He spoke about the privilege of selecting twelve mutants from the extensive history of the franchise, a task that involved characters he had previously written, characters he admired from afar, and some who may not survive the series.

Partnered with Netho Diaz, Foxe promised readers an action-packed experience, with Diaz skillfully spotlighting the large cast of characters. The writer expressed excitement about bringing this vision to life and described the collaboration as a highlight in his Marvel career.
The storyline takes us back to the roots of Apocalypse’s legacy, where he tested mutants for centuries to ensure only the strong survived. As Apocalypse ascends to his throne on Arakko, the question of who will rise to ensure the mutants of Earth do not grow weak in his absence becomes paramount.
