10 Movies From the 90s That Hollywood Shouldn’t Remake (But Probably Will)

5. Waterworld (1995)

Kevin Costner hit it big in the 80s and 90s with The Untouchables, No Way Out, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, and Dances With Wolves. It opened a lot of doors for him as an actor and a director, unfortunately, he walked through the wrong doors and into bombs like Revenge, The Postman, Wyatt Earp, and his magnum-oopsie Waterworld — a film about life after global warming, where people survived on sea-based flotillas, started growing gills, and… OK, I’ll just stop there.

To be fair, Waterworld made a lot of money, nearly $265 million worldwide; shame the film cost $175 million — an insane amount of money for the time (and still pretty high even today). This is a bad movie that got bad reviews, so it’s probably ripe for a remake today… wait, isn’t this the plot of Avatar 2?

4. Twister (1996)

1996 was arguably the year that CGI took over filmmaking, and we’ve been suffering for it ever since. The film focused on a group of plucky-but-nearly-broke stormchasers who seek to out-science a group of sullen-but-corporate-funded stormchasers in their quest to comprehend why tornadoes do what they do.

Twister must have been a horrible experience for its actors, who were constantly standing in wind, rain, mud, and flying debris while facing-off against the forces of nature (essentially just a bunch of giant fans and green screen, while crew flung hay bales and other farm-based props at them). It must have been an OSHA nightmare on that set.

Given the constant threat of global warming and the ongoing media coverage of ongoing weather disasters around the world, it would be pretty tone-deaf of Hollywood to re-make this film, which is probably why they’ll do it.

3. Air Force One (1997)

Wasn’t it cool to imagine Harrison Ford kicking ass as the President on-screen? Wouldn’t it be cool to see another public official fighting terrorists hand-to-hand aboard our nation’s first airplane? OK, but what if the bad guys won? Right? That could work, and I might go see it.

Here’s the question though, who do you cast as the President? Gotta be Sam Jackson, what sane terrorist take on the guy who played Nick Fury? Oh damn, I kinda just sold myself on this movie. But it shouldn’t happen, it’s a bad idea.

2. Deep Impact/Armageddon (1998)

Here’s the problem with 1998, many of the top 20 films that year were already remakes or sequels (Doctor Dolittle, Godzilla, Lethal Weapon 4, Zorro). What’s interesting about Deep Impact and Armageddon is that one is basically a remake of the other — sadly, Bruce Willis could not star in both!

It’s been almost 20 years since we tried to land on an asteroid (or convince one to steer a bit left of the planet). Surely that’s enough time for Hollywood to forget just how awful these two films were, and ignore whatever possessed the studios to make two of these dogs in the same year. At any rate, I hear that Willis is willing to star in just about anything these days, so why not.

1. The Matrix (1999)

Look, I’ve been sucker punching a lot of 90s films in this article — many of them I truly love. The fact is, Hollywood doesn’t discriminate when it comes to remakes, they’ll try anything twice (looking at you Clash of the Titans). However, there are a handful of films that literally changed Hollywood and made their mark on pop culture, and The Matrix is perhaps the single greatest example of what-not-to-remake.

The Matrix came out of nowhere, and it turned Hollywood upside down. The film suggested that humanity was asleep at the wheel and our world was nothing more than just a computer-controlled simulation. It told a brilliant story with fantastic characters (and also taught us that Keanu Reeves could be kind of awesome). On a shoestring $63 million budget the movie grossed $463 worldwide, and spawned two sequels that we shall not speak of.

The Matrix is an example of a film that cannot be improved with better effects or a bigger budget. Sure, someday a filmmaker will try, but they’ll never be able to repeat the experience of seeing this film for the first time. Again, that’s never stopped Hollywood before, and from what we know, they already have a sort of sequel/reboot/whatever in the works.
