Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Hitchcock” is simply too real.

“Hitchcock” hits the shelves this week on Blu-Ray and DVD formats. The cast also includes Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Toni Collette and Jessica Biel in this film about the famed suspenseful director.

The movie is a fictional account of director Alfred Hitchcock attempting to stay relevant in Hollywood after his successful films such as “North by Northwest,” and “Vertigo.” With the media focused on younger directors, Hitchcock felt the need to impress movie audiences with a risky venture called “Psycho.” And this film looks into the relationship of his wife, Alma Reville, and the struggles trying to “Psycho” made.

Director Sacha Gervasi made a good movie with great actors of Hopkins and Mirren as the famous couple. The movie blends with humor, drama and a little bit of romance about Hitchcock’s life during the filming of 1960’s “Psycho.” One perspective that made this Hitchcock film unique is that it looks at Hitchock’s wife, Alma, as a partner in filmmaker. According to this movie, Alma had a huge role on the development of the movie.

Hopkins was good enough to really believe that the actual Hitchcock was in the movie through the likeness, voice and movements. At first, thinking that Hopkins was Hitchcock was a little laughable. Once the movie started, one will simply forget that Hopkins was in the movie.

The Academy Awards even nominated the film earlier this year with Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling.

The DVD copy only has the full movie, but the Blu-Ray has loads of extra features for the film. The extra features include :

The featurettes present many interviews from director Gervasi and the entire cast. The most interesting is to watch the transformation of Hopkins to Hitchcock through the latex and prosthetics. In addition, Gervasi’s cell phone footage recording is a good documentation of what is going on the set.

“Hitchcock” is interesting account after the renewed interest of the famous director. Last year, there was a Hitchcock television movie with “The Girl.” And A&E will be presenting a contemporary prequel of “Pyscho” called “Bates Motel.”

Hitchcock simply lives on.
