Two popular Ubisoft games will be making their big screen debuts in the coming months. ASSASSIN’S CREED, directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons (Opening Dec 21st 2016) and SPLINTER CELL directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Hardy (tentative early 2017 release date).
While the two films have not even made it to preview stages yet, Catchplay (the Taiwanese co-financier) is already eyeing to make the movies into a franchise spawning multiple sequels.
Daphne Yang, CEO of Catchplay, speaking Tuesday as Catchplay launched a pan-Asian streaming video service said:
“They are both adaptations of successful Ubisoft games and would make ideal sequels.â€
Catchplay recently had a huge success with New Regency’s THE REVENANT starring Leonardo Dicaprio. That movie went on to win various awards including an Oscar for Best Actor and Best Director. Catchplay’s deal with New Regency will include ASSASSIN’S CREED and SPLINTER CELL, and according to them the deal “goes beyond the usual investment and distribution arrangements for tent-pole Hollywood studio movies in the Greater Chinese territories (and is a step toward a long-term co-financing and co-distribution arrangement).â€
Are you excited for a potential ASSASSIN’S CREED Franchise? Would you like it to follow the games pre-existing story lines or, should it have completely new settings and time periods? Sound off!
