Could The Black Cat & Silver Sable Movie Be Shooting Sooner Than We Thought?

Sony looks to be at it again. If you’ll recall, a few years back, they were looking to ignore the Marvel Cinematic Universe altogether and create their own universe off of The Amazing Spider-Man films, which saw Andrew Garfield in the lead role. While the first film in the franchise was solid enough, the second one kind of sent it off into the deep end. In an attempt to set things up for a Sinister Six spinoff, the film became too overloaded with villains to remain focused. The result? The movie didn’t live up to their expectations, the universe was canceled, and Spider-Man joined the Avengers in the MCU.

Spider-Man is set to have his own upcoming film later this year with Spider-Man: Homecoming, but if the news over the past few weeks have been any indication, they’re looking to create their own little world outside of the MCU, and outside of Spider-Man. Recently, we’ve heard that they are likely looking to kickstart a darker universe that would consist of Venom and the Black Cat and Silver Sable movies. Considering that the Venom film now has an official release date of October 5, 2018, it would seem plausible that that would be the flick to kickstart this universe. However, a new posting seems to bring that into question.

According to a posting on My Entertainment World, there is an untitled Spider-Man spinoff shooting this fall. Our instinct is to assume this could very well be the Venom movie, but the synopsis below it seems to indicate otherwise.

Here’s what it reads:

“The film is about Silver Sable, a mercenary who runs a company that hunts war criminals. The character has been both antagonist and ally to Spider-Man. Black Cat is an acrobatic cat burglar named Felicia Hardy. The character has a long and tangled romantic history with Spider-Man.”

Now, we can’t rule out the fact that this is an error on the part of the site. Perhaps their intel is actually for the Venom movie, and they misrepresented it in the posting. After all, if Venom really is slated for a fall 2018 release, it’s fair to infer that they’d need to start in the fall of 2017 in order to get it done on time. Plus, that synopsis isn’t so much a synopsis as it is someone just summing up the characters in a couple of sentences.

I remain skeptical of the whole thing right now. I suppose they could shoot this fall for a release date in early 2018, but that seems to be pretty far away, especially considering that Sony is likely aiming for a much shorter budget for these R-rated superhero films. All in all, my grain of salt meter is off the charts on this one, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s updated with a Venom synopsis soon enough.

The Venom movie hits theaters on October 5, 2018.
