Admit it, you’re curious. Sure, Big Bang Theory gets a hell of a lot of hate from the geek community, but when it was announced that Sheldon would be getting his own spinoff series that followed him as a child, we had to wonder just how in the world they’d tackle it. Most of all, many folks undoubtedly wanted to see it crash and burn. But how would they handle such a premise, and how would they capitalize on actor Jim Parsons?
CBS released its first look at the upcoming show young Sheldon, and for those who were expecting a bit of a rehash of the series from which is is spun off, you may be a bit surprised. From the looks of the trailer, it’s not a standard three-camera sitcom, but rather a single-camera comedy show that functions more as a standard TV show than you may expect.
In all honesty, it’s easy to rag on this show for its cheesy, overly-sentimental stylings, but had it not had the Big Bang Theory name attached to it, I’d admittedly have gone to it with a lot less prejudiced eyes. Coming at it from a more objective point of view, this series certainly feels like a cute little comedy that could grow into something pretty interesting.
In many ways, it has the potential to turn into something a lot more meaningful than Big Bang Theory. While its predecessor was a three-camera sitcom with a need to emphasize the jokes, this one has the room to actually focus on the real issues that would come with being as intelligent as Sheldon. We’ll really get a chance to delve into the more lonely aspects of his character, which never would have been possible in Big Bang Theory.
Is it a home run? Not by any means, but based on this trailer, it looks like this series may be more interesting than it really needed to be, which is encouraging.
