If youâ€™re like me, you may have spent your last weekend marathoning the heck out of Netflixâ€™s latest release, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, and boy what a treat that was. While I wouldnâ€™t exactly call myself a fan of the books (Iâ€™ve only read the first one, and dropped it immediately), I was definitely drawn by the quirky visual aesthetic and tone sold in the trailers. It looked like it could be a fun bit of escapism. And man, was it ever.
More than anything, I was impressed by the showâ€™s sharp wit and twisted sense of humor. While Iâ€™d noticed it while reading the first book, it certainly did feel a bit amped up â€” perhaps to appeal to the now grown-up readers who discovered them years ago. Or perhaps I just glossed over it all in text. Regardless, there was a lot to love here, and it looks like I wasnâ€™t the only one.
According to Symphony Advanced Media (via TheWrap), Lemony Snicket was watched by 3.755 million adults ages 18-49 over the average minute. This number comes in above the recently-released Luke Cage, which was also considered a big success by all parties involved. Of course, we donâ€™t necessarily expect that number to mean much to you, so letâ€™s throw it up with some other season premiere weekends!
Fuller House Series Premiere – 7.330 million
Orange is the New Black Season 4 Premiere – 5.843 million
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life Premiere – 4.884 million
Lemony Snicketâ€™s A Series of Unfortunate Events Series Premiere – 3.755 million
Marvelâ€™s Luke Cage Season 1 Premiere – 3.388 million
Marvel’s Daredevil Season 2 Premiere – 3.201 million
While not the highest numbers, they definitely seem like more than enough to warrant a second season for the Neil Patrick Harris-led show. At the end of the day, however, itâ€™s also important to reiterate that these numbers are being tracked by a third party, and as such, we must account for some margin of error. Netflix itself is the only one with internal numbers, and theyâ€™re the only one who knows how all these numbers affect their bottom line.
That being said, the network/streaming service has proven themselves to be an ally of creativily-fulfilling content, and as such, I see no reason to worry about the future for A Series of Unfortunate Events, especially since this will likely only last 3 seasons. All in all, itâ€™s a smaller overall investment â€” and therefore a smaller risk â€” of shows that can go on in perpetuity.
