The El Rey Network will be showing the Baja 500 and with that, one of the stars of their show Lucha Underground will be the Grand Marshal for the event. The El Rey Network passed along this press release to LRM:

Rey Mysterio Jr., star of El Rey Network’s Lucha Underground, will serve as Grand Marshal of the upcoming 49th annual SCORE Baja 500 desert race along with SCORE’s off-road racing legend, Ivan ‘Ironman’ Stewart.

The two sports legends will preside over the festivities that are part of Round 2 of the 2017 SCORE World Desert Championship, to be held May 31-June 4 in Mexico’s Baja California Norte, starting and finishing in Ensenada, the seaside port on the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of San Diego.

El Rey Network will air the entire 2017 SCORE off road series, “Baja Desert Championship” as well as “Baja Desert Championship: Origins,” a one-hour special that introduces audiences to the breakneck speed and high-stakes drama that bond the multi-generational families who race in the SCORE off road series.

I’ve been a fan of the El Rey Network since they’ve debuted. Robert Rodriguez is one of my favorite filmmakers. Movies like Desperado, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, Spy Kids, and Machete are some of my favorite films. Seeing a network that focuses on the types of entertainment that inspired Rodriguez’s films is great to see. Like any network, they need to broaden their horizons to appeal to as many viewers as they can. One way to do that, of course, is sports. I won’t proclaim to be a big motorsports fan but if programing like this brings eyes to El Rey, then I’m all for it.

Remember, the mid-season premiere of Lucha Underground is this Wednesday May 31. LRM will be covering Lucha Underground during the remainder of Season 3 with weekly show reviews. The first two seasons of Lucha Underground are available on Netflix. I strongly encourage you to check out the show. If you feel wrestling has grown stale and boring, Lucha Underground will quickly change your mind.
