Luke Cage: Mike Colter Hopes Season 2 Will Cover The Character’s Very Public Identity

Every one of the Defenders has had his or her own set of very real problems in the Marvel Netflix universe. However, in one aspect, Luke Cage stands alone. Daredevil uses a mask to hide his identity; Jessica Jones doesn’t exactly hide her powers, but she’s managed to make it work without being noticed; and despite being a millionaire and telling everyone under the sun that he’s the Iron Fist, Danny Rand doesn’t exactly have the public eye falling on him about being said Iron Fist

However, as a citizen of Harlem and a begrudging hero, Luke Cage has become something of a role model and icon of many folks. The climax of the last season of Luke Cage, we saw a very public street brawl between him and the big bad of the series, and even following the events of The Defenders, there’s no way that’s going to just go away.

Speaking with MCU Exchange, Mike Colter embellished on this idea, and discussed how this was an aspect of the character that would be tackled in the coming season. Here’s what he had to say.

“It’s something that we’ll explore in The Defenders and hopefully in Season 2 of Cage which I start very soon. It’s very different. He’s out. People know what he looks like. He’s not in any kind of disguise. People know where he lives. They know where to find him so its something he has to deal with.  Most superheroes don’t have to deal with that and can kind of keep it separate.”

Admittedly, the idea of having a disguise isn’t really something that applies to many MCU characters. None of the Avengers have secret identities, but then again, they are backed by the almighty wallet of Tony Stark, so that certainly makes a difference. As stated above, Luke Cage really is the only one whose world is affected by his superhuman abilities, and as such, it’s something that would HAVE to be addressed down the line. This is amplified by the fact that he is a black icon in a city with a history of racial tension.
