What’s next for the franchise? How much longer can we expect folks from the old guard to stick around? That seems to be constant question X-Men fans have with their films. The initial group of actors that shepherded in the series — Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, and Ian McKellan — have likely all moved on form the series they started back in 2000, and now we’re all left wondering how much longer the second guard has to stick around.
On that list of actors are James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, and Jennifer Lawrence, the main stars of the secondary trilogy of the series. Jennifer Lawrence has seemed check out since X-Men: Apocalypse, so it’s no surprise that there’s little conversation surrounding her return. James McAvoy has always been game for continuing his portrayal of a younger Professor X. But what about Michael Fassbender as Magneto?
A recent tweet from MTV reporter Josh Horowitz seems to indicate that him returning in the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix could be more than a possibility, but an inevitability.
Check out the tweet below:
When asked for further embellishment, Horowitz stated that his Happy Sad Confused podcast with Michael Fassbender would be coming later today, so we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for that one. This all sounds like great news for most, though I have to admit, I hope they don’t try and milk the push-and-pull dynamic between Magneto and Xavier this time around. It’s definitely one of the more interesting relationships in superhero comics, but given the weight of the Dark Phoenix Saga, I seriously hope they keep the focus where it needs to be: on the younger X-Men.
