The Defenders may be out today on Netflix, but would Marvel Studios really be themselves without teasing what they have next in the pipeline? And there’s a lot in that pipeline. First, you have second seasons of your favorite shows, with Jessica Jones Season 2 in production, Luke Cage‘s second season in pre-production, and Iron Fist Season 2 having recently been announced. A third season of Daredevil‘s announcement is also imminent, per a recent rumor from the good folks at MCU Exchange. But, what’s next down the immediate pipeline is The Punisher, a new series starring Jon Bernthal as the title character, who we first saw in Daredevil Season 2.
Bernthal has already proven himself to be the definitive Punisher, bringing violence, hurt, and even a little heart to a character that ended up being the highlight of Daredevil’s second season. So check out the trailer get pumped for what’s next (once you finish all eight episodes of The Defenders… and wait several more months…).
We have to say, it looks badass and completely in-line with everything that has come before in the Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Perhaps it even looks a little darker than the likes of Daredevil or Jessica Jones, which would be fitting. After all, Frank Castle is the one of the only heroes on Netflix who isn’t afraid to kill, and he’s certainly killed more in his short time on Daredevil than any other character in their entire season. This, of course, makes us question the balance of this series.
Recently, Bernthal expressed the difficulty in having a show like The Punisher without portraying him as too heroic of a being. At the end of the day, he’s a broken man who’s had one too many bad days, and they can’t be disingenuous about how they portray him. Based on this trailer, it sounds like they’re on the right path to achieving that goal.
