With STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, J.J. Abrams successfully relaunched the franchise. After the tepid response to the prequel trilogy, Abrams found a way to reintroduce audiences around the world to the elements that made them fans of the series to begin with. He also ushered in several new characters, and added some new elements to the STAR WARS mythology.
While we know that there are several STAR WARS films on the way, which will either expand-upon or explore aspects of the mythology that we’re fairly familiar with, it sounds like Abrams would love one of his new creations to get more of a spotlight. See, plenty of things took place between RETURN OF THE JEDI and THE FORCE AWAKENS. Lots of it is covered in a series of books and/or comics that have come out. But one of the new elements that Abrams would love to see explored are the Knights of Ren.
He said as much in an interview with Collider. When asked if there was a STAR WARS anthology film he’d love to see- aside from ROGUE ONE and the upcoming Young Han Solo movie- the director revealed what would interest him.
In his response, Abrams begins very diplomatically. “I gotta say Kathy Kennedy, who’s running it all, she seems to be pushing all the right buttons. There isn’t something that I’d love to see,” Abrams said, before stopping himself. He instantly backpedals on that thought by adding, “I guess the one thing I would say is there’s a Knights of Ren story that I think would be pretty cool to tell.“
The Knights of Ren are a dark organization that rose to some level of prominence in the wake of the Empire’s demise. They were under the command of Supreme Commander Snoke, and their most famous member was Kylo Ren. There’s very little known about them, and we were only given a fleeting glimpse in THE FORCE AWAKENS. Sounds like Abrams would love for someone to flesh them out.
In general, I think fans would love to see more of what happened in the years following RETURN OF THE JEDI, and a film that explores the Knights of Ren would definitely help cover that ground.
What do you think? It should be said that it doesn’t sound like there are any plans to do something like this. But purely as an idea, what would your interest level for a Knights of Ren movie be like?
