By the end of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, it seemed clear that the franchise would be skewing towards a younger group of X-Men for its next entry. After all, Apocalypse introduced the likes of Jean Grey, Cyclops, Jubilee, and Nightcrawler, all of whom seemed to have fantastic chemistry together (really, it’s a shame they didn’t spend more time on screen together), and with the reveal that the next X-Men film would be subtitled Dark Phoenix, it only cemented the idea that this would be focused on that generation of X-Men.
However, with this being the case, it seemed inevitable that if they focused on these younger leads, that there would be less emphasis on the actors that really sold the film. Jennifer Lawrence seemed to be out of the franchise as a whole, and while Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy are always ready and willing to jump back in, but they couldn’t very well return to that well for the 87th time, could they?
So what other big name could be one to help anchor it all? While discussing the probability of actress Angelina Jolie joining the Dark Universe in Bride of Frankenstein, Meet the Movie Press host Jeff Sneider stated:
“I think Angelina Jolie needs to reassert her commercial viability and needs to do a big movie, and if it’s not…Dark Phoenix — which I don’t think it will be — then I think she should do Bride of Frankenstein.”
Admittedly, Sneider states on there that he doesn’t think she WILL be joining the franchise, but during that pause, he does look at the audience knowingly for a moment before speaking, meaning he likely knows something behind the scenes that we don’t in regards to either what projects she’s looking for or what 20th Century Fox is looking for for X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Should they go forward with this, the film could be a way for Jolie to make her way back into blockbuster filmmaking, and a face for Fox to market for the upcoming film, should the others’ roles be reduced to side characters.
