X-Men: Dark Phoenix – Mystique Is More Maternal This Time Around

Looks like it’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix Day. We’ve already had our first look at Jean Grey, and her transformation, but she’s not the only one who has gone through a transformation of sorts.

Rejoining the X-Men gang is none other than Mystique. Back in the saddle as the shapeshifting mutant is Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence, who has been around since the beginning of this rebooted X-Men timeline. In the first photo of the character, we she that she’s sporting a shorter haircut, but that isn’t the biggest change.

“She’s grown up a lot,” Lawrence said to the outlet. “She’s more maternal which surprised me. She starts to get more protective of the [school] children and Charles wants to push them to prove to the world that mutants can be good for humanity and I just see them as small children.”

It makes sense. Although it’s only been a handful of years since this franchise was rebooted, the characters have gone through around three decades or so of change (though you’d never be able to tell by how they’ve aged). To hear that Mystique has become more maternal is no huge shock, and seems like a natural evolution of the character.
