It was a bit weird that Lucasfilm committed to releasing Solo: A Star Wars Story this past May, wasn’t it? From the get-go, the idea of releasing two Star Wars films within a handful of months from each other was pretty darn weird, but it grew even weirder when it became apparent that they would likely need to use that extra time to perform reshoots.
As was widely reported by us last year, Solo: A Star Wars Story suffered a changing of directors when Lucasfilm fired Phil Lord and Chris Miller as directors, and they brought in vet Ron Howard to right the ship. While the movie turned out to be serviceable, it was definitely a victim on three fronts: it had bad press from the reshoots, a crowded month of release, and came only five months after Star Wars: The Last Jedi — a divisive film — hit theaters.

So why did Lucasfilm do it? Why didn’t they delay the film’s release when doing so clearly seemed like the better choice? According to a new report from Star Wars News Net, they wanted to, but were prohibited by Disney. The outlet states that Disney had enough of the studio’s other delays, and “put their foot down.” Their compromise was that they gave them the money they needed to get the movie done on time.
That wasn’t all. Disney also told Lucasfilm that Solo would not get any special marketing treatment — a treatment that could be used to help counteract the bad press and sufficiently hype up the film. The reason for this was that they didn’t want it to clash with Avengers: Infinity War. The outlet continues to state that this is evidence of Disney being in new territory where it has its own properties fighting against one another.
Obviously, this was not a good move, in hindsight, but do you think a December or November release would have changed anything? Let us know your thoughts down below!
