If you’ve ever indulged in the wonderful art of American comic books, chances are you’ve stumbled onto at least one Steve Ditko (or Steve Ditko-inspired) comic. He’s one of the men (along with the legendary Stan Lee) who is responsible for the look of Spider-Man, which has endured for decades with the same base look. He also had a hand in creating memorable villains like Doc Ock, Sandman, the Lizard, and Green Goblin.

Sadly, Ditko — who was 90 — was found dead on his apartment on June 29, with the news only hitting this past weekend. There is currently no cause of death announced.

He truly was one of the greats in the industry, and in addition to his work on Spider-Man, he also helped create Doctor Strange and the overall psychedelic look the comic brought to the table is something that made its way into the 2016 feature film, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. In fact, when many folks think of Doctor Strange, it’s hard not to have one’s mind head to the molecule-esque aesthetic that looks like it was ripped out of a shroom-driven trance.

Even if you’ve never picked up a comic in your life, between the influence he had on these two of these big Marvel characters, you’ve likely indirectly enjoyed some of his work.

Given his overall influence, many creators took to social media to express their condolences and share stories about how the man impacted them.
