Marvel has had a good run with their traditional origin stories, but it looks like the common origin story may have already run its course in this universe. After seeing the formula repeated with movies like Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Doctor Strange, it looks like they’re leaning into changing things up. We saw this approach work for films like Black Panther and Spider-Man: Homecoming, so it makes sense they’d take a more creative approach for Captain Marvel.
While it’s possible Captain Marvel will touch on Carol Danvers getting her abilities for the first time, the film looks to start off further down the line, after she’s left Earth and is living on the Kree planet of Hala. Not only that, she’s a member of the elite SEAL Team Six-type military group called Starforce, led by Mar-Vell.

Starforce will not only bring newcomers in the form of Minn-Erva, played by Crazy Rich Asians‘ Gemma Chan, but a returner in the form of Djimon Hounsou’s Korath, who you’ll remember as the dude who said “Who?” to Star-Lord at the beginning of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. As someone who’s less familiar with Captain Marvel than many comic book readers, I’m hopeful they’ll at least touch on how Carol got her powers, but I’m also very happy to see Marvel chucking the more typical story to the side in favor of something more unique.
