Peter Jackson will forever be known as the visionary director who brought the world of Middle Earth to the mainstream. He is the filmmaker who introduced a generation of moviegoers to Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, and Gandalf. He is responsible for making the phrase “my precious” must be said in a creepy, spine-tingling tone. However, way before The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Jackson was tackling horror. Now, after thirty years since his first project in the genre, two of his horror films are coming back and getting the modern touch.
It turns out Jackson and his company will be restoring his films Bad Taste and Dead Alive for a digital 4k release. While talking to the Empire Film Podcast, Jackson explained the 4k restorations are in the production phase:
“Anything from those films that is available is, like, 1990s Telecine things, which is the best that we had… compared now, they look bloody awful. I just haven’t re-released them because, if I do, I want them to look really good. We’ve actually done some experiments. They look bloody fantastic. They look like they’re shot on 35mm. So yeah, what we’ll do now is.. get really nice 4K copies of these fully restored and back out into circulation again.”

While Jackson will always have his name tied to Hobbits and Elves, It’s nice to see him remembering his roots and bringing back the projects that started his filmmaker career. Bad Taste and Dead Alive are beloved by fans and these remastered editions are bound to fly off the shelves and into the hands of horror aficionados.
