I know, I know. I’ll go ahead and state the obvious right off the bat. It’s not news that Nintendo is working on a Legend of Zelda game. I mean, it’s one of their most successful and recognizable franchises of all time, so yeah not news. But we’re always wondering how long we’ll have to wait to see the game, and if a recent comment from Game Informer‘s Imran Khan is any indication, it may be sooner than we think. No, really, that’s exactly what he said.

“The next Zelda will probably be sooner than we think.” Khan stated in the most recent episode of their podcast. “I will talk to you guys off-camera about stuff.” Okay, there’s not a lot to break down here, but given who he works for, it does seem like he knows at least enough to worry about saying something on-camera. So how possible would it be to get a Zelda game as early as next year?

Well, there are potential options. Back in 2000, Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, pretty much reusing the assets from Ocarina of Time and using them for different purposes. Assuming they take that route, it is possible. It’s also possible we could be getting a top-down Zelda in the vein of A Link to the Past, though that would be decidedly less exciting for some people.

And then, of course, there’s the possibility of remakes. Interestingly enough, at a recent concert performance, Zelda director Eiji Aonuma teased a Skyward Sword remake for Switch, saying, “I know what you’re waiting for – Skyward Sword for Switch. Right?”

But is this the game Khan was teasing? Doubt it. He’d know from the get-go how comparatively unexciting a remake is compared to a new Zelda, and with that in mind, could we very well get two Zeldas in the next two years — one remake and one new? We’ll have to wait and see.
