Instead of becoming a feature-length film, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Erik Larson’s historical non-fiction book The Devil In The White City: Murder Magic And Madness At The Fair That Changed America will be a Hulu series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the news was announced by Hulu and Paramount Television onstage at the Television Critics Association press tour early Monday. Since 2003, the project has been in the hands of multiple studios, including twice with Paramount. Names like Tom Cruise and Kathryn Bigelow have been attached to the production, but it was DiCaprio who purchased the rights to it in 2010. The Hollywood Reporter went into detail on the best-selling novel’s subject matter:
The Devil in the White City tells the chilling true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were forever linked by The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Each embodying American ingenuity at the dawn of the 20th century — Daniel H. Burnham, a brilliant and fastidious architect racing to make his mark on the world and Henry H. Holmes, a handsome and cunning doctor who fashioned his own pharmaceutical “Murder Castle” on fair grounds — a palace built to seduce, torture and mutilate young women.

There has been no word yet as to whether DiCaprio will be in front of the camera for the series. Initially, when it was labeled a film production, DiCaprio was going to produce and star while Scorsese was set to direct. The transition into a streaming network series may change that approach. Joining DiCaprio and Scorsese as executive producers will be Stacey Sher (Django Unchained), Rick Yorn (The Wolf Of Wall Street), Emma Koskoff (The Departed) and Jennifer Davidson (the still-in-development Time Machine).
No word yet on when The Devil In The White City will begin filming.
