There are some classic films that could use a sequel and others that they should just leave alone. The 1988 film from Paramount Pictures Coming to America starring Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones and Shari Headley is one of those that I think does deserve a sequel. Whatever happened to Akeem and Lisa? This could be a very entertaining film.

Well we had already heard that a sequel to Coming to America was on it’s way, but to today via TheWrap we have also learned that Paramount Pictures plans on releasing the film on August 7th, 2020. The film will be directed by Craig Brewer with Kenya Barris, the creator of Black-ish, rewriting the script. Jonathan Levine was previously attached to to direct with a screenplay that was written by Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield. Murphy is expected to return for the sequel although there hasn’t been anything official announced.

The film will be produced by Kevin Misher, Murphy with Barris serving as executive producer. The original film in the late 80’s was directed by John Landis and it followed Murphy’s character Akeem, who travels to Queens, New York from his home nation of Zamunda to escape an arranged marriage and find a wife that actually loves him for who he is as a person and not his royal title.

One interesting note about the date that Paramount has chosen for the release of the Coming to America sequel is that Warner Bros. Pictures also has that date currently slated for an untitled WB film.
