Stan Lee cameos are a tried and true tradition of Marvel movies. He’s been in these movies from the beginning, and while we are approaching his final physical appearances, the reverence is still present and accounted for. Apparently, following his death, there were actually even some changes made to this weekend’s Captain Marvel, which is already setting the box office on fire.
Fans who have seen the film, will already know we stumble upon a Stan Lee reading a Mallrats script on a train. Kevin Smith junkies will know this is another ’90s nod, as Lee made a cameo in that film back in 1995, so this is another way the film indulges in the nostalgia. So what was changed? Obviously, they couldn’t go in and re-film Lee’s part, but they did add a different reaction from Carol Danvers, as co-director Anna Boden revealed to Mashable.
“Instead of just the pure laugh we had, we had a little bit of a smile from Captain Marvel in response to it, and she kind of breaks character for a moment. I think it reflects a little bit of what the audience is feeling, and we allowed that to happen.”

So rather than just letting the moment pass, the let it linger for a moment longer, letting us take in Captain Marvel‘s reaction. This moment could definitely be just a bit confusing in 100 years when our alien lords take over and are confused why the movie stops for a brief second for an old man that has nothing to do with the rest of the plot, but all in all, it’s likely a good move, as the respect for Lee among fans is real.
