Emilia Clarke Compares Daenerys Targaryen To Lawrence Of Arabia And It Works, Sorta

One of the most controversial aspects of the finale season of Game of Thrones has been the turn in the character of Daenerys Targaryen. The fan favorite became unhinged and last week did some unspeakable acts, which by her own logic were necessary.

Now I won’t mention specifics here to avoid spoiler warnings, but it’s fair to see that the change in Dany shocked many members of the audience. I’m already on record as saying I liked where they went with Dany, my issue was how well they built things to this point and the generally rushed feel of the last two seasons. Now Emilia Clarke has spoken about how she sees Daenerys very much like Lawrence of Arabia when chatting with The New Yorker recently.

“Well, fundamentally, he’s brought in as a savior. He goes in and fights for the people, but then, ultimately, it’s a story about how power corrupts absolutely. You see power turn this man wild and mad. He can’t see anymore through the haze, the giddy highs, of being in charge. And that’s what Daenerys experiences. And yet I care for her so much. She’s been a part of me for so long that, in reading this script, I did what any actor is told to do and would do. You have to agree with your character. If you don’t agree with your character, then you shouldn’t take the job.”

I really like this comparison, and my only regret for this show was that the writers and producers Benioff and Weiss were so eager to finish the show quickly. That they didn’t allow this side of Daenerys slowly come to the fore of her character. Instead of suspense, it felt like a surprise, and Alfred Hitchcock famously explained the difference between suspense and surprise on film many years ago (suspense is a surprise, only with audiences seeing it coming, which creates a building of anticipation).
