If there was any hope that fans had about Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman film connecting with the rest of the DC Extended Universe, it sounds like you can put them to rest. THR is reporting that the filmmaker is looking to make quite the change in the beloved character Commissioner Gordon.

Batman’s law-abiding ally was most recently played by J.K. Simmons in Justice League, but for The Batman, Matt Reeves has his sights set on Westworld’s Jeffrey Wright.  The outlet states that Wright is in negotiations to play Gordon, and while he’s respectable in his own right, it’s quite the departure from Simmons.

Not only is Wright a person of color, but he’s only around 11 years younger than Simmons, meaning that any real hope audiences had of this Matt Reeves world eventually connecting to the DCEU can pretty much be flushed down the toilet, as that would make Gordon substantially older in Justice League than he is.

It’s clear at this point that DC is playing very loosey-goosey with their films’ approach to their universe, and that only filmmakers who choose to will ultimately be connected.

Connections aside, Wright is an inspired choice and will be a good counterpart to Robert Pattinson’s Batman.
