Chernobyl Creator Set To Co-Write Pirates Of The Caribbean Reboot

Disney seems dead-set on reviving the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. It hasn’t been too long since Dead Men Tell No Tales hit theaters, but it was clear after that film that if things were to continue, it needed some fresh blood. Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were hired on for a bit, but have since parted ways with Disney. Now, it sounds like the House of Mouse is going another direction.

Joining on to develop a new story for the long-running series is franchise vet Ted Elliott, who worked on the first four Pirate films with Terry Rossio. However, instead of Rossio, joining Elliott this time is Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.

At this time, we don’t know if Johnny Depp will be returning as Captain Jack Sparrow, but after all of the personal trouble and diminishing returns for the character, most wouldn’t blame Disney for going in another direction.

While Mazin may be an odd name considering the serious dramatic nature of Chernobyl, it is worth noting that he had a hand in writing Identity Thief, the second two Hangover movies, the second two Scary Movie movies, and The Huntsman: Winter’s War…so he’s just as much of a mixed bag as most writers in the business.
