We’ve known for what must have been a couple of years now that HBO has been developing a handful of spinoff projects for their fantasy epic franchise Game of Thrones. For the longest time, it seemed that the “Long Night” project that Jane Goldman was working on until literally a few days ago would be the one to come out first. Unfortunately, that one was canned, and instead, we got House of the Dragon, which will follow the period leading up to the Dance of Dragons, aka the Targaryen Civil War.
But what was the true reason for that Jane Goldman project getting canceled? Was it a Highlander-type situation where they could only be one? Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin took to his blog to clear up any confusion on the matter.
“I do not know why HBO decided not to go to series on this one, but I do not think it had to do with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. This was never an either/or situation. If television has room enough for multiple CSIs and CHICAGO shows… well, Westeros and Essos are a lot bigger, with thousands of years of history and enough tales and legends and characters for a dozen shows.”

While Martin isn’t the authority on HBO’s thought process, I can imagine he at least has some insight into whether or not the network was open to doing more Westeros-set series, and hopefully, in the months to come, we’ll hear what came of The Long Night.
What do you think of Martin’s comments? Do you think those other shows have a chance in hell of making it to HBO? Let us know your thoughts down below!
