It would seem like audiences in the United States as well as other markets around the world are not ready to let go of the Frozen Franchise. To backtrack a little bit before we get into all of the records that Frozen 2 has broken. The first film was released in November of 2013 and set a holiday animated record with a five day domestic gross of $93 million that included $67 million for the three day weekend. Overall it went on to make $1.28 billion globally and became the top-grossing animated film of all time.

Frozen 2 opened this past weekend to audiences around the world and it did not disappoint. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Frozen 2 opened to a record $130 million domestically and $228.2 million overseas, which included 37 markets for an overall haul of $358.2 million making it the number one global debut ever for an animated title. This film overperformed the estimates that had been made on Sunday, especially overseas. But that’s not all folks!

Frozen 2 is the first animated title that is released outside of the summer season that has crossed the $100 million mark on its opening weekend. Domestically, it’s the third-best start for an animated film behind 2018’s Incredibles 2, which brought in $182.7 million and 2016’s Finding Dory, which brought in $135.1 million. Overseas it was the best opening of all time for an animated film in the U.K. and France. It’s also the biggest ever for a Disney Animation or Pixar film in China, Japan, Germany, and Spain.

This film was directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and features the returning voices of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel as Princess Anna and Queen Elsa. Also returning were Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, and Santino Fontana. Joining the sequel were also the voices of Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown. Frozen 2 is carrying the weight of bringing back up the box office numbers which had slipped 27 percent from last year after disappointing results from Terminator: Dark Fate, Doctor Sleep and other films. Frozen 2 along with some of the other current films are looking to take advantage of the Thanksgiving weekend.

Being that I have an eight-year-old daughter and seven-year-old niece I had no choice but to be part of those numbers over the weekend. Although I thought that the sequel was not as good as the first one, the target audience, the girls, thought it was great and haven’t stopped talking about it.
