At the tail end of high school and into college I couldn’t get enough of sites such as eBaum’s World and College Humor, which have both evolved over the years and spawned other websites of the same style. CollegeHumor has been around since 1999 bringing us all types of laughs, but after 20 years major layoffs are headed their way due to the sale from IAC.
CollegeHumor’s Chief Executive Officer stated:
“IAC has agreed to let me run with the company myself. While we were on the way to becoming profitable, we were nonetheless losing money — and I myself have no money to be able to lose.”
There is about six months of material that the site has at their disposal which should help during the transitional period, but the layoffs will mean that more than 100 individuals will lose their jobs. Even though the site has been around since 1999, IAC acquired the company in 2006.
Many individuals who have previously worked for the site have been able to use it as a springboard to other careers. Numerous staff members have gone on to work for Saturday Night Live and other comedy shows while co-founder, Ricky Van Veen, is an executive over at Facebook.
