RDJ On Whether He Would Ever Return To The Role Of Tony Stark For Marvel

For me, Iron Man aka Tony Stark had the perfect ending as he became the one to lie on the barbed wire to let the other guy cross. Of course, what I mean is that Tony sacrificed his own life to save not only the lives of his friends, but of the entire Universe. That’s a pretty hard ending to top, and for many, whilst we may miss Tony Stark, we wouldn’t want to see that ending diminished in some way.

However, that does not stop folks from asking Robert Downey Jr. about it every other week. RDJ as we all know him is currently starring in Doctor Doolittle, his first big movie since ending his run in the MCU. So far the movie does not appear to be lighting the box office on fire, but it is early days into his post-Avengers career. RDJ recently appeared on The Joe Rogan Show, and of course, he was asked about whether he would ever come back, here was his response.

“To me, starting up again is off the table. I feel like I’ve done all I could with that character. There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious. But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff.”

This certainly isn’t the actor vowing off ever returning as Iron Man, in fact, if we look back at what he said post-Endgame to TODAY, he was never going to rule it out.

“I’m not sure. Are we in bargaining now?” Downey joked. “I am so pleased, just that, I wound up where I have. I’m very fortunate so, I’m not the kind of guy who – I want to try to keep it classy. We’ll see.”

The thing is, we absolutely could have Tony Stark back, after all, this is the MCU. We have time travel, alternate universes, and probably a host of other possibilities we have not seen on screen as yet. The question shouldn’t be could he come back, but whether he should come back? I can only speak for myself, but right now, I would not want to see the return of RDJ in the MCU outside of a message, or a little voice work. It would give less meaning, and strip away some emotion from his ending in Avengers: Endgame and I think that movie deserves to maintain its power for a long time to come.

However, I would definitely be open to seeing some sort of brief and weird return for RDJ many years down the line. All it would take is the heroes needing Tony Stark for something no one else can deal with and so they have to traverse the Multiverse to ask for his aid. That would be a fun guest appearance, but I am talking ten years down the line or more.

For now, I think Tony Stark should remain very dead, even if his influence lives on forever in the MCU. What do you think of Downey Jr.’s comments, do you agree with me that he should remain dead and buried for a long time to come? Shout out in the usual spot below as always.
