From fall of 1992 to September of 1995 Warner Bros. Animation gave us one of the best superhero animated series of all time. Of course we are talking about the Emmy winning Batman: The Animated Series. This series from the minds of Paul Dini, Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett ran for 85 episodes and many Batman fans out there consider it the definitive adaptation of the Dark Knight. Also even though Kevin Conroy only voiced Bruce Wayne aka Batman, he is also considered by many as the best Batman. Recently we were able to see him take on the role of Bruce Wayne during The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. This is also the birth place of characters like Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya. So why are we talking about it again in 2020?

Via Entertainment Weekly, we have learned that DC Comics will be launching a new six issue mini-series titled, Batman: The Adventures Continue this April. This will be set in the world of the animated series. It will be written by Dini and Burnett with artwork from Ty Templeton who has previously worked on a previous tie in comic series Batman Adventures. This series is part of an initiative to introduce characters into DC Collectibles’ Batman: The Animated Series lines of toys with Templeton designing the new additions in Timm’s classic style. This means that although we will see a lot of familiar characters, we will also see some characters that we haven’t seen in the Batman: The Animated Series style, one example they give is Jason Todd.

“We’d gone from Dick Grayson to Tim Drake, and we had left out Jason. What we’re doing with this is looking at this as a chance to go back and actually acknowledge that was a part of the animated Batman’s history,” Dini told Entertainment Weekly during an interview. “For the first time, you’re going to see that story and you’re going to see what happened in that relationship. So, it’s our chance to not only to do Jason Todd but also the Red Hood. There are other characters like Azrael, who was popular in the comics around [the time of the show], and Deathstroke, who we never used in the animated series.”

Don’t get me wrong I am always excited when I hear that DC wants to expand on the mythology of Batman: The Animated Series. But when the announcement states that it’s objective is to promote a toy line, it really makes me question the the series. Are they forcing characters together just for the sake of having them debut in that world? Does this story change, modify or enhance anything that we have held so dear about the series? I will still be giving this series a shot but I will not be expecting too much from it.
