Eragon Author Christopher Paolini Wanted To Achieve This HUGE Goal In His New Sci-Fi Novel

Eragon author Christopher Paolini has big ambitions for his latest novel.

Nearly two decades ago, a high school student Christopher Paolini self-published a little book called Eragon. It was later republished by publisher Alfred A. Knopf, where it went on to garner a massive fan base. Paolini went on to publish three sequels to the book and eventually, this led to a Hollywood film. Sadly, that film wasn’t very good and never got a sequel, but there was no denying the success of the thing. While Paolini’s publications have been fairly limited since the quartet closed out in 2011, the author has still been a staple of the fantasy genre in many ways.

Now, Paolini is taking a big leap this September with his novel To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. As the title would indicate, this would not be a fantasy novel, but instead a beefy, 900-page sci-fi story. But just because Paolini comes from the world of fantasy doesn’t mean he isn’t dedicated to making this a pretty hard sci-fi story. In fact, as he revealed in a recent interview with YouTuber Daniel Greene, Paolini is dead-set on making sure his book doesn’t defy the laws of physics as we currently know it.

But Paolini had a more specific goal with this book in terms of what he wanted to achieve technology-wise. Here’s what he had to say.

“I wanted — and I spent almost a year researching the technology for this book,” Paolini said. “I wanted a system of faster-than-light travel that had not been used by any other author or science-fiction franchise, which is really hard to think of. And B — and this is the big one — did NOT allow for time travel. Because almost every major FTL system…if you really look at the physics of it, it would allow for time travel. And C — and this is where I tie myself into total knots — does not contradict physics as we know it.”

You can’t say Paolini doesn’t have ambition. If you watch the entire interview, it’s very clear he has an almost obsessive dedication to the most minute details of his new book. Luckily, it also sounds like he knows his audience, because he went on to reassure readers that this didn’t mean his book was nothing more than a bunch of techno-babble. It would all, presumably, be presented in service to the story.

Christopher Paolini will launch To Sleep in a Sea of Stars this coming September. Does his dedication to the hard sci-fi elements get you any more excited? Sound off down below!
