Mandalorian Season 3 Filming Will Not Be Delayed Due To COVID-19

The Mandalorian Season 3 will not face any delays due to COVID.

The coronavirus pandemic heavily changed things in the entertainment industry. We had so many productions shut down due to safety concerns. Back when, we didn’t have much information on how the virus spreads, and while things are still spreading, we do have a better idea of how to avoid doing so in a professional setting. With that in mind, it makes sense that we’re seeing many productions around the world start up again.

But I’d say that The Mandalorian already had an advantage before we had much in the way of information. Unlike most sets, it takes place nearly completely in-studio, with all the different parts being controlled by crew remotely in a closed set. Series creator Jon Favreau said as much in a recent interview with THR.

“The fact that the set is much more contained is a benefit, because you can limit the number of people,” Favreau said. “A lot of the people controlling it are doing it remotely from what we call the Brain Bar, which is a bank of gaming computers, essentially. The amount of people near the camera could be much smaller than [usual]. We also shoot a lot outside, which is helpful, too. We build to a moment in filming more like an animated production, where we have a lot of storyboards, a lot of discussions and scouting in virtual reality. We use cinematic tools in VR much the same way we did for The Lion King and The Jungle Book. A lot of times the actors you are seeing on the screen aren’t actually there on set.”

In other words, The Mandalorian continues to pioneer the world of filmmaking. In many ways, it serves as a convergence of live-action and animation. It features heavy planning — so heavily planned that they are able to control the numerous different factors from a distance. If they plan well enough, they may even be able to reduce the number of required bodies on set at any one point, which will also help them out quite a bit.

In filmmaking, your ability to obtain your vision is often dependent on how well you can control the factors around you. Now, in the case of films and TV shows today, the safety of the crew is also dependent on said factors. The more you can control those, the more likely you can keep the crew safe. With that in mind, it’s no wonder a production with so many factors under control could be one of the safest out there.

And then, add in the obligatory quarantine periods, and you’re golden.
