Florencia Franco and Jimena Monteoliva On the Argentinian Animated Film Lava [Exclusive Interview]

In the past year, many strange events occurred with a pandemic, election, riots, and an economic collapse. The only thing missing is an alien invasion to top it all off.

In our reality, an alien invasion will not happen (*knock on wood*). However, the animated import Lava has a group of survivors trying to survive a supernatural and high-tech invasion of giant cats, a diabolical giant witch, and a mysterious serpent.

The English language voiceover is provided by Janeane Garofalo as Debora. Sofia Gala Castiglione provides the Spanish voiceover of the same character.

Here’s the synopsis of Lava:

Debora makes a living by drawing the skin of her clients. One night, her housemate invites her boyfriend and friend to their house. Sitting in the armchair, they consume the series of the moment, Gain of Clones, until, suddenly, the signal is cut off and the screen is dyed red, while subliminal images float. No one remembers what happened in the last two minutes. The answer will be in the enigmatic presence of giant cats that later invade the city.

This is the second feature film from the Ecuadorian animator Ayar Blasco. He outlines apocalyptic situations where chaos and paranoia are the best excuses to meet surrealist creatures and scenes.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta chatted with producers Florencia Franco and Jimena Monteoliva for the film. We talked about Blasco’s vision and animation style for the film.

Florencia Franco and Jimena Monteoliva executive produced films, such as Lava, Expansivas, To Kill the Dragon, and the short Kill the Children together. Franco produced two other documentaries of 50 Chuseok and Extramuros. Monteoliva produced many other films, including Kryptonite, All Night Long, She Wolf, and Caito. Also, she was the executive producer for 2016’s mini-series Nafta Super.
