Sergio Liden on Writing Autism Children’s Book His Own Way [Exclusive Interview]

In celebration of World Autism Month of April, we featured author Sergio Liden in an extensive conversation about his book His Own Way.

Millions of American adults and children are diagnosed with some kind of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In 2016, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported 1 in 54 children fell within the spectrum at 1.85 percent.

Despite these statistics, many Americans fail to acknowledge or understand people with autism. In recent decades, many people push for further education to inform both adults and children about the autistic populace.

For Sergio Liden, he decided to write a children’s book His Own Way to explain it colorfully to both children and adults.

Liden’s son is autistic, but not necessarily the character in the book. Through raising his son and daughter, his family experiences helped him crafted this book in the understanding of autism from a child’s perspective.

The 39-page book is illustrated by Francesco Orazzini. The dedication reads, “To those who feel invisible, remember, you are very much seen.”

Here’s a brief description of His Own Way:

I was told those who are autistic live in their own world. What happens when your brother is the one who’s autistic? How do you deal with it? And what if you’re too young to understand what autism is? The story follows a little girl whose younger brother is on the spectrum.
