Over the past 48 hours, Star War’s fans started to hear reports that Disney had figured out how to make a real lightsaber and would be selling it to the public. During “A Special Look Inside Disney Parks” press conference Disney Parks President Josh D’Amaro presented what appeared to be a real lightsaber. With no photos or videos allowed by those in attendance the only thing the press could do is describe what they saw. Of course, this led fans to dream up what it could possibly be. Thanks to VR/AR/Web developer Ben Ridout on Twitter he was able to give us a better understanding of how the new lightsaber will work.
Did #Disney invent a real working #lightsaber?
Yes they did.
It won't melt through metal blast doors, or cut off your hand, but it does feature an illuminated blade that will extend and retract at the push of a button.

From the description, Ben compares the new lightsaber design to a retractable measuring tape. This design is very different from the current state of lightsabers in the market. While the design looks amazing, it appears that these lightsabers will not be able to be used for combat. This extension and retraction of the blade will be the highlight of this product.
Currently, lightsabers that are sold at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is character replicas and the ones you can build at Savi’s Workshop. Since the opening of Galaxy’s Edge, they have been popular among fans. Any fan of Disney knows that they are always trying to innovate, a patent for a lightsaber was filed back in 2017 for a “sword device with a retractable, internally illuminated blade.”
There is a good bet that it will be very difficult to get a hold of one of these lightsabers when they become available.
