Joe Taslim On His Ice Cold Role As Sub Zero In Mortal Kombat [Exclusive Interview]

The wait is finally over! Today is the release of the highly anticipated reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise on the big screen. Since 1992 the classic fighting video game from Midway has been entertaining fans with all kinds of violence. One of the biggest rivalries in pop culture without a doubt is Scorpion and Sub-Zero. While one is cool and collected trying to freeze you in place, the other is fiery hot looking to pull you in.

In New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat, that rivalry is once again front and center. Something we have seen from the first trailer as well as some of the posters. They even released the first seven minutes of the film giving us a little look at the past between the two characters. Tasked with bringing these classic characters to life is the martial arts specialist Joe Taslim and the ever so talented Hiroyuki Sanada. Fans of the franchise will have a blast watching these two display their martial arts talents on the big screen.

Here is the synopsis for Mortal Kombat:

From New Line Cinema comes the explosive new cinematic adventure “Mortal Kombat,” inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise, which most recently enjoyed the most successful video game launch in its history, Mortal Kombat 11.  The film is helmed by award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker Simon McQuoid, marking his feature directorial debut, and produced by James Wan (“The Conjuring” universe films, “Aquaman,”), Todd Garner (“Into the Storm,” “Tag”), McQuoid and E. Bennett Walsh (“Men in Black: International,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”).

In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down.  Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax. A Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with.  Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark.

Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano. As he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe.  But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

With the release, LRM Online had the opportunity to get into the mind of Sub-Zero! As we talked to Joe Taslim about the responsibility of the iconic role. We spent some time also talking about his admiration for Sanada and his experience in working with him. It’s impressive how nice of a guy he is given how cold (pun totally intended) Bi-Han is in Mortal Kombat. You can check out the full interview down below!
