One of the things a lot of us are looking forward to as the world opens back up is to be able to go back to music festivals! It is at these gatherings that we sometimes are able to find true escapism. We are able to find commonality with others in the genres of music that we have traveled to see. But it goes beyond music as they bring together people of all walks of life.

Back in the summer of 1969 there was an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture, and fashion. This was The Harlem Cultural Festival in then Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). It had been filmed and documented, but strangely the footage was never shown and to the most part forgotten. But thanks to the work of Amir “Questlove” Thompson, we will now get to witness the celebration of Black culture that happened in Summer of Soul (….Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)

Summer of Soul is a wonderful documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. There it deservedly won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. Below is the synopsis for the documentary.

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary. Part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). 

The footage was never seen and largely forgotten–until now. SUMMER OF SOUL shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. The feature includes never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Ray Baretto, Abbey Lincoln & Max Roach, and more.

This is definitely a must-watch for all music lovers. It will be available in theaters and Hulu on July 2nd, 2021.
