This past weekend at the Anime Expo Lite, Disney+ shared a special look at the upcoming series Star Wars: Visions.  It is an opportunity to bring Anime and Star Wars together that will be special for some Star Wars fans.  For some reason, it has taken this long for Lucasfilm to officially incorporate Japanese anime into its wheelhouse.  There have been some recent attempts like Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures but nothing that truly adopted the style of Japanese anime.  For fans of both Star Wars and Japanese anime, there was only one true example that lived on the internet.

Back in 2015, Paul Johnson (Otaking77077 on YouTube) debuted the short fan film Tie Fighter that was a tribute to the classic computer game of the same name.  If you have never seen the short fan film you can check it out below.

Tie Fighter is an Empire-focussed short Star Wars animation, drawn with the crazy detail and shading of classic 80s anime. The short film was drawn and animated by Paul Johnson and it took over 4 years’ worth of weekends, with music by Zak Rahman and sound design by Joseph Leyva.

When Tie Fighter made its online debut it was met with praise from fans.  With over 12 million views and 401 thousand just on YouTube, it has become one of the most popular Star Wars fan films of all time.  With this popularity, some figured it would only be a matter of time before Lucasfilm attempted their try at Japanese anime.  Now we have it with Star Wars: Visions.

As a fan of both genres, it is great that we are getting Star Wars: Visions and that the artist/storytellers are allowed to have the freedom to tell their stories.  If you haven’t seen the special look into Star Wars: Visions you can check it out below.
