At the Television Critics Association press conference, Elisabeth Moss talked about getting in the headspaces of characters, especially with a character with Kirby Mazrachi.
“I always try to pull in from my own life, even if I don’t have a direct parallel with the character. I’m always trying to pull from any kind of experience I may have had because for me that just obviously is going to make it feel more real and more honest,” she said. “Even if I haven’t had that particular experience that Kirby has had, I can understand the feeling that she might be getting from that experience or that she might be getting from that experience or I can understand that particular relationship with that person or with her mother.”
She credited the scripts written by Silka Luisa helped with this character.
“Honestly, I pulled so much from the scripts and from the conversations that Silka and I had. We first spoke about the script, the first script almost two years ago now. It was just an immediate understanding of the tone, the character, and the story that she was trying to tell. It felt like we just were on the same page from the very beginning and it felt like that just kept happening with Kirby throughout the project,” Moss concluded.
On the book to screen adaptation, Luisa wanted the focus on Kirby’s character as the overall arc.
“Well, I read the book as a fan. I think it was so unique just being able to blend the different genres. The biggest transition I would say in adapting it would be anchoring it a lot more in Kirby’s point of view,” said Luisa. “We really wanted to make the show very, very subjective, which I think for the mystery of it all—really helped because you’re sort of with Kirby going through this maze and you can only see ahead of you. It’s not until the end of the season you get really that kind of aerial view of what’s going on.”
Despite the slight changes, Luisa insisted, “A lot of the mythology shifted a little bit as well. I think the fundamentals of what the book was trying to say, that we stayed true to. The thing that really drew me to the book was Kirby. The book did a beautiful job of this really authentic portrayal and she’s a really special character.
