Taika Waititi’s Star Wars will be something new says the director. Waititi who is currently still writing the next Star Wars movie recently spoke to Total Film about what his plans are. Of course Waititi isn’t giving anything away. Though Taika did says he wanted to expand the Universe into ‘something new’ with ‘new characters’ and not just fill in the gaps of already established narratives.
“Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand. I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone, that’s great. Though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world. Otherwise, it feels like it’s a very small story.”
This is good news for me and many others fans who have been looking for Star Wars to tell us a brand new story for a while. For me, I’m okay with the current MandoVerse timeline. It’s quite the time gap between the Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. However, the period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope? I feel like we are hitting saturation point on now, and that’s 10 years shorter. Currently we have Andor Season 1 and 2, in addition to The Bad Batch for however many Seasons that goes for. Not to mention the currently airing Obi-Wan Kenobi and rumors the show will get a sequel.

I am not a fan of the sequel trilogy. Therefore, a part of me wishes Waititi’s Star Wars movie would just go 50-100 years into the future. Or, potentially even further ahead, or behind. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy suggested the new movies would be set around the sequel trilogy era. For me, I hope it’s not too close.
