The 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai had a simple plot premise of heroic warriors protecting a helpless village from evil marauders and ending up sacrificing themselves. Later, the same storyline evolved into a western involving gunmen to protect a town in The Magnificent Seven in 1960. Since then, these two films have inspired countless iterations of heroes protecting the weak and sacrificing themselves. In John Gulager-directed horror comedy, seven undead creatures are given a second chance to protect a family farm in Seven Cemeteries.
The film stars Danny Trejo, Sal Lopez, Samantha Ashley, Efren Ramirez, Vincent M. Ward, Lew Temple, Richard Esteras, and Maria Canals-Barrera.
Here is the official synopsis:
A recent parolee (Danny Trejo) gets a Mexican witch to resurrect his old posse so that they can help him save a woman’s ranch from a ruthless drug lord.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with director and co-writer John Gulager about the inspiration behind the film. We also discussed Danny Trejo’s lead role, the special effects, makeup, and these revenants.
John Gulager grew up in the industry, the son of Clu Gulager (The Killers, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Miriam Byrd Nethery (Barney Miller, Bound for Glory). At nine years old, he starred in a short film, A Day with the Boys, which opened the 1970 Cannes Film Festival. He grew up on the Universal Studios backlot, which helped mold him into a director today. After scoring music and being a cinematographer on many projects, his big break as director came with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Project Greenlight, a documentary series to feature first-time directors. He won the competition with the horror feature film Fest, which successfully followed with two more sequels. His other directorial film credits included Piranha 3DD, Zombie Night, and Children of the Corn: Runaway.
Seven Cemeteries is in select theaters, On Demand, and available digitally on Friday, October 11.
