It’s finale time and here is my The Penguin series finale review, luckily it was a great ending to a great series. I’ve been extremely positive about this show far and with good reason. As always, I’m staying SPOILER FREE, which is always trickier with a season/series finale.
The Penguin is the kind of show, where you know that certain things have to happen at the end, just because of the main character we are dealing with. This was always going to be the story of how Oz became the boss of the Underworld. The question was always, how does it happen? What effect does it have on the rest of the cast of the show?
I can report that The Penguin and main writer Lauren LeFranc nailed the landing with this one. We start the show with a feeling of weird empathy towards Oz, but as the series progresses we see that consistently eroded. The events of the penultimate episode probably eroded all empathy from viewers for Oz. However, there are a few more steps to go yet. By the end of the finale you will be rooting for Robert Pattinson’s Batman to kick seven shades of s*** out of Oz in whatever comes next.

I won’t discuss the fates of the other main characters like Sofia, Vic and Oz’s mother. All three have important arcs which are concluded here in interesting ways. There will be a few surprises along the way folks and it all works beautifully.
The cast are great from start to finish and we are left with a well written, harrowing, and dark show about the rise of a true villain. Oz has become, not just a mob boss, but a true monster. There are plenty of little secrets left to fill in on both Oz’s past and future. His sick psyche is also left exposed for us the viewer to observe in action.
Such a well written, and acted series that feels genuine and ‘real’. I’ll say that The Penguin is so far a superior story to the one we got in The Batman. If this series can keep up this level of quality then there is real potential for this Matt Reeves BatVerse. Will there be a The Penguin Season 2? Who knows for now, it seems it is possible according to writer Lauren LeFranc. However, even if we don’t, we should be getting another series connected to this Universe at least. We also have of course The Batman Part 2 which is currently in development.
As said up top, a great end to a great series. The Penguin was definitely my pick for the best TV series of 2024. I have not watched them all yet of course, but it’s the best one I’ve seen this year.
Finale GRADE A+
Series GRADE: A+
Not every episode I watched was an A+, but I don’t think I gave any episode less than an A- and overall the series is an A+ for me when you look at the whole piece. Phenomenal stuff.
