T.J. Hooker The Movie Is Happening At Netflix

While William Shatner was continuing the adventures of Captain Kirk in the ‘80s Star Trek cinematic installments, he was fighting crime on the small screen. For five seasons, Shatner led a squad of rookies in blue on the Aaron Spelling-produced cop show T.J. Hooker. To be honest, I only heard of the series during Michael Rappaport’s audition scene in the movie True Romance. Hollywood will be emphasizing the show’s kitschy direction with a cinematic reboot coming to Netflix.

Per Variety, T.J. Hooker will be reconceived for the streamer as an action-comedy in the vein of 21 Jump Street and The Naked Gun. Screenwriters Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel are on board to pen the film with a meta take on Shatner’s otherwise earnest cop drama. Sophie Cassidy and Matt Crespy of 2.0 Entertainment are set to produce alongside Adrian Askarieh for Prime Universe Films and Alex Westmore for Vali Vista Films.

Aired on ABC from 1982 to 1985 before moving to CBS, where it concluded in 1986, T.J. Hooker starred Shatner as a veteran sergeant for the LCPD in the war on crime alongside swinging bachelor Vince Romano (Adrian Zmed) and his police captain’s daughter Stacy Sheridan (Heather Locklear). The series was notable for its variety of guest stars, including a Star Trek reunion with Leonard Nimoy as Hooker’s ex-partner seeking revenge against his daughter’s attacker.

For those who were fans of the show, one could expect comedic takes on T.J. Hooker’s classic moments and signature Shatnerisms. Even the memorable shot of Hooker hood-jumping on a moving vehicle has been satirized on SNL. In terms of casting, it’s likely that a new generation of stars will tackle the original characters, albeit with some politically correct changes.

Then there’s the big question: Is Shatner going to make a cameo appearance? In the same Variety piece, the reboot’s producers have reportedly engaged in talks with the 94-year-old icon to appear. Whether he’s the new Hooker’s father or a retired police chief is unknown.
