According to a new trade report, Disney execs are pleased with Avengers: Doomsday, but concerned with the marketing for The Mandalorian and Grogu plus, a little more besides. The report comes from Variety in a piece all about the tasks facing new Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro. I won’t go through everyone in the largely opinion piece, you can read the full article in the link if you like. However, I will include all the points the writer claims are from inside sources.
First off it seems so far that Disney’s execs are pleased with what they’ve seen from Avengers: Doomsday.
“Some pundits argue the future of the superhero franchise may ride on the hotly anticipated ‘Avengers: Doomsday, although sources inside the company’s film division believe the health of the MCU does not hinge on an individual title. Executives are pleased with what they’ve seen for the December release.”
As for the criticism of The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s Superbowl spot? Reportedly “there are concerns” from Disney executives.

However, it seems feelings on Star Wars: Starfighter are far more positive for now.
“There’s a sense that ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’ a spinoff from ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ director Shawn Levy, is more likely to satisfy fans when it hits theaters next spring, with sources who have seen footage praising Ryan Gosling’s performance and suggesting Levy has recaptured the franchise’s spirit of fun.”
We’ll see folks, we’ll see. Disney were also reportedly very happy with The Last Jedi and Rise of the Skywalker and both (in my opinion) were a mess.
Meanwhile it sounds like Disney may be respectfully tapping out of the Avatar franchise. The last Avatar movie, Fire & Ash failed to crack $2Billion at the box office. However, as one inside tells the trade, that’s not quite enough for the expense of these movies.
“If you make $1 billion on the next movie, you still lose hundreds of millions…”
Unless Jim Cameron can find a way to make these films cheaper, this could be the end of the franchise, in this form. I guess we will see in time how accurate this report proves to be.
