Veteran actor Jeremy Irons has been cast in a villainous role opposite Henry Cavill in the upcoming Highlander reboot. This piece of casting came as a surprise to me when I saw it. Mainly because all the main and secondary roles from the original have been cast. So what role could Irons possibly serve?
However, just because this is a reboot does not mean it’ll be the same as the original. According to THR,
‘In a part that could be juicy, Irons will play the movie’s other antagonist, the leader of a secret order called The Watchers, who are keeping an eye on the immortals and see them as a threat to humanity.’
Now, fans of the TV series which spawned from the movies will have heard of The Watchers, a usually villainous group. However, they never appeared in the original movie and (probably) not in the increasingly bad sequels (that I recall). However, I did stop watching both the show and the later movies at some point. Therefore, apologies if they appeared in Highlander (5?) or something.

What this does tell us, is the movie will have some of the TV lore built in from the start. I expect The Watchers will feature more in the modern plot than the historical one. You’ve got to imagine director Chad Stahelski wants to leave room for sequels where the original really didn’t. However, who can say till we get more information.
As you probably know production on the Highlander reboot has been delayed. Only a few weeks, due to an injury sustained by star Henry Cavill during practice. Now we have solid information this reboot will be different, who knows what other casting we can expect to hear in the coming weeks?
